Police have launched a search for five armed suspects accused of killing two people during a tavern robbery in the northwest of the country.

A tavern in Wolmaranstad was robbed in the early hours of Monday.

Two men aged between 30 and 35 were injured and died on the spot.

The 50-year-old tavern owner was taken to the hospital after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

North West Police spokeswoman, Colonel Adele Myburgh, said information they had was that the five suspects were playing pool at the pub and closed the main gate just after midnight.

“They robbed the owner of the tavern after shooting him and took a firearm and an unknown amount of cash,” Myburg added.

She said: “The owner’s wife was hit with a bottle during the ordeal. She was discharged from hospital shortly after admission.”

Myburg added that after the suspects fled the scene on foot, bystanders allegedly attacked two people inside the tavern, mistaking them for robbers.

“They were attacked by an angry mob and their car parked outside the tavern was damaged.”

According to her, both victims were hospitalized and discharged after medical treatment.
