The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo says the sacking of emergency workers by the Department of Health is unacceptable.
DA health spokesman Risham Maharaj says the move will affect services as the department is understaffed and has high vacancy rates.
Twenty-one workers were dismissed for failing to meet the required standards to remain active members of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Another 46 workers are likely to be laid off on Friday for the same reason.
Maharaj says they have written to the Ministry of Health, Phophi Ramathuba, to express their concerns about the management of health workers.
“Such a gross oversight by the department regarding the registration of emergency medical personnel is highly unacceptable, it further raises questions about the registration status of other medical professionals and personnel in the department. The department currently has a medical liability of 15 billion rand due to litigation and cannot continue to mismanage its staff and provide medical professionals who do not meet the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies,” Maharaj added.
