Authorities are evacuating people as strong winds fan a fire burning towards the Siview informal settlement in Gkeberha in the Eastern Cape.
Flames destroyed two homes in Beach View.
Provincial coordinator of the humanitarian organization Gift of Givers, Koren Conradi, is on site.
She says that a hall has been identified to house the evacuated residents, but their transportation remains a problem.
Conradi says they are working with the fire department to get more resources.
“We are working very closely with the firefighters and trying to evacuate people. Fire engines are also stuck on the ground because they cannot approach the fire. The wind increases very strongly, the fire spreads quickly. We are trying to find helicopters to fight the fire from the air, and we urgently need 4×4 vehicles that can carry water tankers to access the area.”
