South Africa’s school governing board has called for the immediate dismissal of a vice principal who was allegedly caught red-handed having sex with a student in a classroom in Seleteng, Ga-Mphahlele outside Lebawaggom in Limpopo.

The incident allegedly took place on Monday afternoon at Kgaga Tlow High School.

Enraged members of the community then attacked the man.

The chairman of the provincial council, Derrick Mosaana, says: “While the council recognizes the challenges facing society in this morally decaying society, it does not give teachers the right to prey on students. Therefore, we urge the department to act on this issue immediately. The council will be held on Thursday, 1str December 2022 to visit the school and the student’s family. We are also giving 1000 rand for every reported case of sexual assault that could lead to the dismissal of sex offenders posing as teachers in our schools.”

Concern over the increase in sexual misconduct against students

Meanwhile, the National Professional Organization of Teachers (Naptosa) has expressed concern over the increasing number of cases where teachers are accused of sexually harassing students.

The organization blamed a gap between legislation and implementation in the provinces, which find unethical teachers guilty of offences, but do not report them to the South African Council of Teachers.

Naptosa KwaZulu-Natal chief executive Tirona Moodley says this is worrying.

“It’s really becoming unreal. I think that’s the only word I can use. We raised the issue of a teacher asking a student about the size of her vagina … and two weeks ago we had a teacher who was actually arrested for collecting sperm from his students. This is an unrealistic nature of sexual assault, and our law does not even cover these definitions of sexual assault.”

Northern Cape teacher accused of sexual misconduct

In April, a primary school teacher in Jan Kempdorp in the Northern Cape was provisionally suspended after being accused of sexually abusing a grade seven student.

After he allegedly asked her to kiss him and touch his private parts. The young girl’s family is demanding his dismissal.
