Police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a shooting that left two people dead in Johannesburg’s Eldorado Park.

A 26-year-old man was arrested in Maraisburg, west of Johannesburg, on Tuesday. He was accused of killing two people last week, police spokesman Lt. Col. Mawela Masondo said.

The man will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon, according to Masondo.

“Police officers from the Gauteng Organized Crime Investigation Team have arrested one of the men suspected of killing two people in El Dorado Park on Friday,” Masondo said.

“Members of the Gauteng Anti-Gang Squad and the Organized Crime Squad worked hard to identify and secure the swift apprehension of the suspects. The breakthrough took place over four days and the team is following up on all possible leads to arrest the remaining suspects. “

El Dorado Park has been rocked by several mass shootings in recent months, and residents are concerned about the area’s high crime rate.

In September, a group of residents camped outside the local police station to demand action from the police and local authorities. A local councilor said there were at least 19 shots fired, killing seven people.

In June, four residents of Eldorado Park, including two students, were injured by stray bullets. The Lancea Vale High School students, aged 18 and 19, were walking home after school when they were shot.

In August, seven teenagers were shot and killed when gunmen opened fire on them in an apartment building. One of the boys, Benjamin Leisegang, died in the incident.
