The ANC has been condemned for its conspicuous lack of female representation in nominations for the party’s top six positions. On Tuesday, the party named the top six candidates.

Only two women have been nominated for the position of Deputy Secretary General – Namvula Makanyane and Phoebe Potgieter.

Political scientist Dr Fikile Vilakazi says it is shocking that in 2022 women are still not being considered for higher management positions.

“It’s shocking, it’s completely shocking. This is one of the things I stand for as well. Because I’m also speaking from a feminist place. There are feminists in the country who are frankly telling the ANC that it’s been over 110 years and you need to show what the constitution says about gender parity, about sexism in the organization. Put a woman in the position of leader, not deputy.”
