JOHANNESBURG – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said the South African government is bound by its extradition treaty with Israel.

Last Thursday, law enforcement agencies of the country arrested an Israeli fugitive who was hiding in Bryanston.

The 46-year-old man made his second appearance in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Myondwane said a senior lawyer from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has been tasked with the extradition of the recently apprehended Israeli fugitive.

The fugitive is wanted in his homeland for crimes he committed in the early 2000s as an associate of the Abergele crime family.

Myondwane said prosecutors would petition the court for his extradition.

“So if the court decides that the person is extraditable, then it goes to the executive stage where the minister of justice has to make a decision.”

Myondwane said the criminal charges the fugitive faced in South Africa would run parallel to the extradition request.

The case has been adjourned to Thursday, when the defense is expected to receive extradition documents.
