The African National Congress (ANC), together with its alliance partners, the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), are set to picket outside the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Saturday afternoon.

The purpose of the picket is to express anger and disappointment in connection with the parole of Janusz Walus.

He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 1993 murder of former SACP general secretary Chris Honey.

Last week, Chief Justice Raymond Zonda ordered Walus released, overruling the Department of Justice and Correctional Services, which had refused to grant Walus parole.

Hani’s widow, Limpho, expressed her disappointment after the verdict, calling it insensitive.

“There has been constant uproar within the ANC and its alliance partners following the parole order for Chris Hani’s killer, Janusz Walus. ANC presidential candidate Dr Zweli Mkhize said Hani’s death was the worst travesty of justice in the country. While President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was shocked by Concourt’s decision on the matter. It remains to be seen whether Janusz Walus will be released on parole or on a certain date,” says Hani.
