JOHANNESBURG – The Cape Town Authority (CoCT) and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) have warned beachgoers to be on the lookout for sharks in the Strand Beach area.

The warning came after a whale carcass washed up on Strand Beach near the pavilion on Friday.

Marine law enforcement officers in the city are urging beachgoers, surfers and boaters to be careful of sharks while they are near the beach in the direction of Gordon Bay and Makassar.

City crews also urged beachgoers to refrain from entering the water on Saturday and Sunday.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the whale carcass was currently being removed.

“It is normal for whale carcasses to attract sharks, so caution is advised. We are appealing to water users along the Strand and towards Gordon’s Bay and Makassar to be aware of possible increased shark activity due to the whale carcass and to exercise caution,” Lambinon said.
