Zille denies reports DA has suspended WC Speaker’s membership – SABC News

Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council chairperson Helen Zile has denied reports that the party has suspended the Speaker of the Western Cape Legislative Assembly, Masizola Mnkasel.

This follows Mnkasela’s recent decision to speak out against the party’s motion of no confidence against him following allegations of corruption earlier this year.

Five months ago, the DA suspended Mnkasela from all party activities. It said the Federal Law Commission found the allegations related to irregular travel, claims for living expenses and allowances sufficiently credible.

The ousted Speaker of the Western Cape Legislative Assembly says the Hawks have yet to approach him about the allegations:

Zile says Mnkasela must re-apply for membership by 10am today.

“We did not terminate his membership; this was the termination of his membership. In July, he unreasonably disparaged the party and its processes, citing, among other things, a witch hunt against him. He actually accused the party of this after the disciplinary process started against him. But he didn’t hold back for long until he held a press briefing last weekend in which he repeated his claims of a political witch hunt and an agenda that directly violated the constitution. So that was the termination of his membership and he has until 10 o’clock today to re-apply for membership.’
