The U.S. men’s national team was held to a 0-0 draw by England in a World Cup Group B match in Al Khor, Qatar on Friday.
With that result, the U.S. can advance to the knockout rounds after defeating Iran in the final group stage match on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar. England wrap up their match against Wales on Tuesday.
England have four points, Iran three after beating Wales 2-0 on Friday. USA has two points and Wales has one. The top two teams advance to the knockout round.
The momentum shifted in the second half, but the best chance was England’s Marcus Rashford’s 87th-minute free kick, which Matt Turner easily saved.
Then, in the third minute of stoppage time, England captain Harry Kane headed in a free-kick but sent the ball wide.
The USA had not lost in their previous two World Cup matches against England, winning 1-0 in Brazil in 1950 and 1-1 in South Africa in 2010.
It was the USA’s first shutout against a European opponent at the World Cup since that match in Brazil.
It was an entertaining first half with England pressing early, the Americans fighting back to almost score and the English almost scoring.
Kane had a great look at the American net in the 10th minute from the center of the box before defender Walker Zimmerman made a block. It was redemption for Zimmermann, whose foul allowed Wales’ Gareth Bale to convert an 86th-minute penalty for a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
In the 26th for America, Weston McKenney took a feed from Tim Weah only to shoot it over the net.
In the 33rd minute, Christian Pulisic beat the English defense, but his shot hit the crossbar.
Finally, in the first minute of stoppage time in the first half, Turner made his first save, diving to his right to stop Mason Mount.
