CAPE TOWN – President Cyril Ramaphosa has underlined South Africa’s determination to become a world leader in green hydrogen.

Ramaphosa addressed local and international delegates in the green energy sector at the inaugural South African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called it a green energy revolution.

Welcoming delegates to the Century City Convention Center on Tuesday morning, Ramaphosa reiterated that green hydrogen had been identified in the investment plan as one of four “big milestones” in the country’s just energy transition.

“It shows that it has tremendous potential for growth and investment. But beyond that, it has tremendous potential to create jobs and significantly improve the economic lives of our people.”

Ramaphosa said South Africa does have existing and future potential for green hydrogen production.

The government has said that under the Just Energy Transition, South Africa is estimated to need about $98 billion over the next five years to ensure a just transition.
