Janusz Walus, the killer of Chris Hani, was stabbed in prison amid an early parole.
According to Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabaho Nxumalo, Walus was involved in an unfortunate knife incident.
DCS says it will provide a detailed report on the incident at a later stage, but said Walus is in stable condition and that DCS health care workers are providing the necessary care.
Walus is believed to have been stabbed by another inmate from the same block.
Recently, the Constitutional Court ordered the Minister of Justice to release Valus on parole within 10 calendar days.
The high court’s decision has sparked outrage from Honey’s family, the SACP and other stakeholders who believe Walus committed a heinous crime and that he was not eligible for parole.
Walus was released by the Home Secretary to serve his parole in South Africa. However, it is still unclear whether the Polish immigrant will remain in South Africa or return to Poland.
Walus is serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of the late SACP general secretary Chris Honey.
