Moroccan subs strike late to earn shock win over Belgium

Abdelhamid Sabiri scored from an audacious difficult angle and second substitute Zakaria Abouhlal added a second in stoppage time as Morocco produced a shock 2-0 win over Belgium in World Cup Group F on Sunday (November 27).

Sabira’s free-kick near the corner post caught Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at the near post as the ball curled in for the opener in the 73rd minute.

Abuhlal’s goal came on a counter attack set up by Hakim Ziyech as Belgium were caught pressing forward to equalise.

The North Africans also had the ball on target during the last kick of the first half when Ziech’s free-kick eluded everyone in the box and caught Courtois unmarked, but a VAR review revealed captain Romain Saiss was simply offside.

Morocco moved to four points from two games with world number two Belgium on three. Canada and Croatia meet later in Sunday’s other Group F match.
