Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the sequel to the 2019 film Knives Out, reunites a new cast in Greece for a new murder mystery and the case of the dapperly dressed detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig.
Rian Johnson, who directed both films, helped solve one of the franchise’s biggest mysteries this week when he explained what the “glass onion” meant.
He told Reuters: “Well, it’s a Beatles song first and foremost, and it’s kind of a Beatles song about a mystery that isn’t really a mystery.”
He added: “I ended up working on the idea of a glass bulb of this thing, which appears to be densely layered but is actually quite transparent. It’s a metaphor of sorts that Blanc grabs onto and beats to death throughout the film. So that means a few things.”
The cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr. Each character’s clothing hints at something about them to help the audience.
“I can’t remember a movie I’ve been in for quite some time where the costumes were like that in the movie,” Norton said. “It’s character-defining. . . . Every entrance is a laugh.”
Lovers of mysteries will find something to enjoy.
“The movie is incredibly generous with its spoilers, its Easter eggs, whatever you want to call them,” Craig said.
“If you watch it, you’ll get some of it, if you want to watch it again, you’ll get more, and it continues to grow because what Ryan does so brilliantly is he lays this whole foundation, he does all of these things and every single thing pays off.”
The film will be released in limited theatrical release in the United States and elsewhere in November and will be available to stream on Netflix ( NFLX.O ) in December
