Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has condemned the unruly behavior of students following the killing of a Year 11 student at Qalabotjha High School in Vlakfontein on Thursday last week.
A fight took place between a group of boys near the school, a student was fatally stabbed. The incident is believed to be the result of banditry in the area.
Gauteng Education has assured parents and students that schools are safe. The department also says it will embark on a new program to develop practical measures to reduce school violence.
School safety
According to Chiloane, the issue of school safety has become relevant again and violence in schools is unacceptable.
Chiloane further added that “As far as we know, the alleged perpetrator has been arrested and police are looking for witnesses to come forward. He is believed to be from a rival gang and largely from a rival school. It’s not necessarily a school problem, but the community has issues with gangs, crime, and shootings. But we want the perpetrator to actually be brought to justice for this. Students must be protected at all times and those who commit such crimes must be made to pay for their crimes.”
