JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) has agreed to meet with other provinces to discuss the positions of the party’s Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General and Treasurer General.

This is happening on the eve of the 55th National Electoral Conference of the ANC, which is due to take place in mid-December.

Following the extraordinary meeting of the PEC on Monday, the party held a briefing for the media.

The province – which is sending the second-largest delegation to the 55th conference – wants party president Cyril Ramaphosa for a second term and is backing current national chairman Gwedo Montashe.

Provincial secretary Lulama Ngkukaitobi said it was moving closer to other provinces in terms of gender parity and introducing the younger generation into leadership positions.

He said it was important for the party in the Eastern Cape to meet his Mpumalanga counterpart.

“So we have more in common with Mpumalanga than any other province except for a few posts of the Deputy President and the TG [treasurer general].

“Now we will have to meet with Mpumalanga so that we can convince each other on how we consolidate the unity of the organization, how we ensure that the test of the renewal organization is a little bit better…”
