DIRCO warns of fraud with legalization services

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has issued a warning about a scam in which fraudsters are using the department’s name to obtain money for legalization services.

Legalization services provided by DIRCO are free, according to the department’s warning issued Wednesday.

These include legalizing official (public) documents drawn up in South Africa for use outside the country with an Apostille or Certificate of Authenticity, and providing instructions to clients to obtain correct signatures or documents if the documents provided are incorrect or incomplete, among others .

“If members of the public receive requests for payment for DIRCO’s legalization services, please report them immediately to the nearest police station and DIRCO,” the department said.

For consular notarial services and legalization of official (public) documents, contact DIRCO on 012 351 1000 or email: legalisation@dirco.gov.za. – SAnews.gov.za
