Hundreds of Munsiville residents in the West Rand have turned out to hunt illegal miners who are said to be hiding in caves near the area.

The alleged zama-zams are said to have fled the Soul City informal settlement in Kagiso following violent protests calling for the arrest of illegal miners in western Johannesburg.

A local resident says they have been awake since 4am on Friday morning in search of the criminals who are said to have escaped from Soul City where they are occupying caves near the Mansville informal settlement.

See the tweet below for a local comment:

A group of young and old people from Mancienneville gathered near an informal settlement in search of zama zamas.

The search ended in disappointment after it was called off just after noon.

Another young man from the area says they tried their best but “at least the police managed to arrest two people earlier today”.
