The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is seriously concerned about the armed clashes yesterday, 15 May, which included indiscriminate fire and the alleged use of heavy weapons in the Yansur area, a densely populated area of Tripoli. The current mobilization of forces associated with various armed groups is creating tensions and increasing the risk of clashes that could escalate into armed conflict.

Such incidents underscore once again the urgent need to address the proliferation and use of weapons outside state control. The mission calls on all Libyan actors to remain calm on the ground at this critical time in the country.

The mission also calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and use dialogue to resolve contentious issues. The ANPL reminds all parties of their commitments to protect civilians, civic infrastructure and public peace.
