Two men have died and another has been hospitalized after allegedly drinking a substance reportedly offered to them by a passing motorist in Makapane, Limpopo.

Police spokesman Motlafela Mahapela says the 55-year-old survivor is said to have been among those looking for work in Makapane when a motorist on Thursday gave him bread and a 2-litre bottle half-filled with a red substance believed to be soft drink.

He is believed to have then shared the substance with his younger brother, aged 50, and another man, aged 36, who both became intoxicated and died on Saturday.

Mahapela says they have opened an investigation.

“Limpopo Police Commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe has ordered a full investigation into the deaths of two men who died on Saturday morning after allegedly consuming a substance reportedly offered to them by a passing motorist in Makapane. The third man was hospitalized. Two investigative cases have been opened, the police investigation is ongoing,” says Mahapela.
