Individual TikTok users in Southeast Asia are testing a feature that allows them to view videos posted by people nearby.

According to TechCrunch, a company spokesperson said that users participating in the limited test will see a new feed tab displayed next to the Followed and For You feeds on the app’s homepage.

THE “NEARBY” FUNCTION WILL BE IN TIKTOK

“We’re always thinking of new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” the spokesperson said in an email.

Additionally, the new channel is being tested along with a new feature that allows creators to add location tags to their videos. According to a TikTok spokesperson, the ability to add location tags is gradually rolling out to creators.

Social media consultant Matt Navarro, who first tweeted about the feature, said “TikTok is catching up to Snapchat’s Snapchat Map and Instagram’s recently launched Photo Map search features.”

He also added that TikTok is also developing a dedicated shopping feed to go along with the For You/Followed feeds.

Business Insider reports that while TikTok’s new feature is great, Brendan Gahan — who is the chief social officer of entrepreneurial agency Mekanism — suggested it could “eat market share” from the likes of Yelp, Instagram and Google . This is because 40% of Millenials prefer to use TikTok and Instagram as their search engine over Google.

OTHER FEATURES

Last week, TikTok confirmed to TechCrunch that it is launching a new sharing feature that will allow users to share their TikTok stories on competing social networks, including Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram. The social media platform has been piloting the feature since last year.

Previously, users could share their TikTok stories directly with friends in the app by clicking their profile picture on the sharing page that appears when they click the three-dot menu in a story. The same interface also allows users to save a video to their device, delete it, or change privacy settings.

Now, with the new sharing option, a number of popular social apps will be included, as well as the ability to copy a video link.
