Four years after its world debut at the Paris Motor Show and after many pre-series spy shots appeared on various online platforms, BMW officially released an updated 3rd series before sales began in July.

The first three to use the CLAR platform, which at launch resulted in a weight loss of 55 kg compared to the previous generation F10, the internal G20 3 series retains the same overall dimensions, but with a fresh look not inspired by the 4 series, the new 7 series or really updated X7.

Externally easy-to-notice settings include a restyled headlight with standard inverted LEDs, a slightly larger grille complete with active grilles and an additional black glossy finish, a deeper lower air intake and new 17-inch alloy wheels.

Changes to the back face are even slower and now look closer to the 5th series.

The rear LED taillights of the 5th series have become thinner, the bumper has been redesigned, and the exhaust pipes, increased from 90 mm to 100 mm, have been moved closer to the sides of the bumper.

As before, buyers can show the 3 Series with the M Sport package, the M Performance, which boasts the option of 19-inch alloy wheels, and the new M Sport Pro, which combines the M Sport with the Shadowline package in addition to also being painted red . Brake calipers company M.

Inside are the biggest changes, namely the new curved dashboard, which debuted on the XM and became available on the 7th series earlier this month.

Replacing the BMW Live Professional Cockpit, the setting combines a 12.3-inch digital dashboard with the new 14.9-inch iDrive infotainment system with 8.0 and 5G operating systems.

Together with new air vents, standard three-zone climate control and an upgraded intelligent BMW personal assistant system, the 3 Series leaves the gearshift lever as it is now replaced by a toggle switch for the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. Thus, six-speed mechanics are no longer available.

In terms of safety and driver assistance, all 3 Series derivatives are equipped as standard with autonomous emergency braking, which includes the detection of pedestrians and cyclists, an upgraded camera system, cruise control and lane departure warning.

Four petrol models are offered worldwide; 318i, which produces 115 kW / 250 Nm, 135 kW / 300 Nm 320i and 330i, which produces 190 kW / 400 Nm. They all run from the usual 2.0-liter turbocharger.

Completes the M340i xDrive range, whose 3.0-liter in-line six-turbocharger develops 274 kW / 500 Nm. As the name suggests, the Range-topper is also the only model to have an xDrive all-wheel drive system from the start.

The range of the 3rd series on oil combustion consists of two models with a volume of 2.0 and 3.0 liters; the first includes the 318d, which produces 110 kW / 320 nm, and the 320d, which provides 140 kW / 400 nm. The latter consists of a twin-turbo 330d that develops 210 kW / 650 nm, and an M340d xDrive with a capacity of 250 kW / 700 nm.

The Touring trunk can hold 500 liters, but with the rear seats lowered it increases to 1,510 liters.

As for the hybrid models, both the 320e and 330e combine a four-cylinder petrol with an electric motor that adds up to 50 kW and 83 kW respectively. The combined power is 150 kW and 215 kW.

Confirmed for South Africa from the third quarter of this year, the 3rd series will again be offered only as a sedan, and the Touring station wagon will remain the only European model.

While the current lineup, consisting of 318i, 320i, 320d, 330i and M340i xDrive, is scheduled to be moved, expect a price jump from the current R732 286 launch sticker as soon as sales begin.
