British Chancellor Rishi Sunak was included in the list of rich people of the Sunday Times as one of the 250 richest families in the UK, the first politician to do so.
Britain’s top finance minister and his wife, Akshata Merty, have joined the list in 222nd place with a total estimate of £ 730 million ($ 911 million), the newspaper said.
The bulk of the couple’s wealth comes from Merty, the daughter of Indian billionaire businessman Narayana Merty, who founded the Indian IT conglomerate Infosys.
Akshata Murti owns a small stake in the firm, valued at £ 690 million ($ 861 million).
The revelations that Merty has no tax status in the UK have damaged Sunak’s political position, MPs told Insider, along with disclosing information that Sunak had a US green card as Chancellor.
Since then, Merty has renounced his tax status without residence after the dispute and will pay taxes in the UK from his global income. Sunak renounced the green card in October 2021 before his first trip to the United States as a minister.
He is the first front-line politician to appear since the list was created in 1989, and his appearance on the list came as Sunak faced calls to take action against rising prices for food, energy and other items first. necessary when inflation approaches 10%.
Sunak told the Confederation of British Industry on Wednesday that “the next few months will be difficult”.
Earlier, the chancellor was criticized for not having contact with ordinary British people, and the accusations did not help to pose for photos with a smart mug of coffee worth 180 pounds ($ 224), which keeps the drink at the right temperature for up to three hours.
In addition to their homestead in Georgia in Richmond, Sunak and Merty also own a penthouse in Santa Monica, California, and two properties in London.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Dominique Raab defended the inclusion of Sunak in the list. Raab told Times Radio that Sunak was “a fantastic example of someone who has been successful in business, who comes to make a big impact in the civil service.”
Raab described Merty as “an incredibly successful entrepreneur.
