The Western Cape Government says its K-9 units in Swartland and Overstrand have arrested 236 people for various offenses in the past three months. The Swartland unit has nine officers and nine dogs and the Overberg has seven officers and five dogs.

Provincial Public Safety Minister Regen Allen says the primary mission of the K9 unit is to assist police and others in identifying and locating contraband, particularly drugs, explosives, firearms and ammunition.

Allen says: “We want to have more K-9 units deployed along our highways and various other spaces, so it is important that the SAPS is managed by the Western Cape Government so that their K-9 unit can also be used effectively. We will continue our effective and efficient working relationship with all role players, while ensuring the collaboration of resources by creating a culture of cohesion to achieve operational goals, ultimately leading to safer roads and communities.”
