Twenty alleged instigators arrested for public violence during last July’s riots are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
In a statement, the Hawks said the suspects were arrested in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces.
The multidisciplinary team working on the investigation included an investigative team of digital forensics experts.
The suspects are believed to have used social media and other platforms to incite violence in the community.
Hawks spokesman Brigadier Thandi Mbambo says the investigation is ongoing and that more arrests are imminent.
The suspects will face charges including conspiracy to commit violence, inciting violence in a public place and incitement.
More than 350 people have died and billions of rand in damage have been caused by rioting and looting in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, which erupted after former president Jacob Zuma was jailed for contempt of the Constitutional Court.
