Police dispersed a crowd of angry Dumisani Mahae High School students in Chatsworth, Durban, who attacked a man accused of stealing copper cables at a school.

The students are said to have rebelled against the man, and when police arrived, they found a group of students attacking the suspect.

In a statement, the province’s education department thanked the students for speaking out against what they called hooligans.

Tenjiswa Ngkoba, a police spokesman, said: “They went to the scene and found a group of students who attacked a man in his thirties. Police then dispersed the crowd, which was brutal. They managed to save him and he was taken to a hospital near the district for medical treatment. “
