Stormers name two debutants in URC opener

Stormers coach John Dobson underlined the need to make a strong start to the defense of the Rugby United Championship when he named two debutants in his squad for the opener against Connacht.

With international football on hiatus, the Western Cape side open their 2022/23 campaign against the Irish side on Saturday afternoon (2.30pm kick-off) at Stellenbosch FC’s home ground, the Danny Craven Stadium.

Full-back Clayton Blommetjies and young center Suleiman Hartzenberg will make their debuts for the Stormers after joining the team in the off-season, with Ernst van Rijn captaining the side.

“We’ve seen the likes of Clayton, Suleiman and a few others show some promise in our pre-season and it will be good to see how they respond on Saturday,” Dobson was quoted as saying by the Stormers website.

“We have an exciting mix of youth and experience and more than a few players who really stepped up for us last season.

“The players can’t wait to get back into action and we know how important it will be to get off to a strong start this week, especially when we’re playing in a rugby-mad place like Stellenbosch on what should be a great day for it. »

The match will be played before the Western Province Rugby Union Super League A and B finals, which will be played immediately after at the same venue.
