President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to investigate alleged corruption and mismanagement at the university and the recruitment of honors students. This year, there have already been threats against the university management.

In May, the head of the university’s fleet, Petrus Roets, was shot dead in his car while driving home from work.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Renuka Vital says SIU’s intervention could not have come at a better time.

“No matter where it is done wrong, action will be taken even if people try to threaten life. The SIU will also assist in these shootings, including Mr. Roth who died, we hope that arrests will be made in connection with these shootings so that it is abundantly clear that this will not go unpunished,” said Vital
