The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia says that some online and print media are misinterpreting the content of the Conference’s recent statement in July.

Nowhere in the statement does it refer to the escape of priests and nuns or the closing of churches in Tigray. The purpose of the statement is to reflect the main problems in Ethiopia in the various areas affected by the conflict. It does not refer to any specific conditions in Tigray.

The conference has not received any official notification from the Diocese of Adigrat in Tigray about the escape of priests and nuns or the closing of churches.

Therefore, we request all media outlets to retract any publications related to the above information and to take prompt action to rectify the situation.
