CAPE TOWN – Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nkakula, has said the expulsion of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members in June is not conducive to the good image and propriety of the institution.

She spoke out after an independent investigation found no evidence of gender-based violence or sexual harassment when EFF MPs were forcibly removed from the chamber of parliament.

Several deputies were physically evicted by the parliament’s security services during the debate on the presidential budget.

Parliamentary Spokesperson Molata Motapa: “The investigation shows that it is the attitude of members towards the rules, rather than the rules themselves, that appears to be the problem. Lawyer Baloyi-Mere has recommended that the Speaker hold a meeting with all chief whips to ensure that all members of the public are complying and complying rules of parliament”.
