Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament Patricia Kopane has formally informed Parliament of her resignation from both the Democratic Alliance and the National Assembly.

In a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nasiwiwa Mapisa-Nkakula, she thanked the people of South Africa and the Free State for the support they have given her over the past 19 years.

The former Free State DA leader is reportedly leaving to join German Mashaba’s Action SA.

Kopane previously told the SABC that she felt she had no place to contribute to the DA.

She said she was tired of defending the DA through the perception that it was a whites-only party, adding that a group of white people believed black people should work for them.

In a brief statement, the DA said it accepted Kapane’s resignation and thanked her for her service.

During her time as a Member of Parliament, Kapane was a member of the All-Party Women’s Caucus Committee as well as the Standing Committee on the Auditor-General.
