Mercedes-Benz has said it is working with a supplier of materials for Sila batteries to use silicon anode chemistry in batteries that will be optional in the future electric G-Class.

The new anode material, according to the automaker, will increase the energy density of the batteries without compromising safety or other performance parameters. The technology allows to increase the energy density by 20-40% to 800 W / L at the cellular level. This allows you to store more energy in the same space, increasing the range of the car “by a significant amount.”

The materials will be produced using renewable energy at a new plant in Washington State, and Mercedes-Benz is the first publicly announced automotive customer. Both companies are targeting the middle of the decade for the EV G-Class with a longer run with new technology as an option.

The automaker invested in Sila in 2019.

The force claims to have been the first to propose a new lithium-ion chemistry with “dramatically higher energy densities” that is likely to be used in future Mercedes models.
