Tall film buffs were in for a treat after it was announced that American actor Tom Cruise would reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the film Sequel to Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick.

Nearly three months after the action-packed film’s release, it has officially taken over the 1997 classic, Titanicas the seventh highest-grossing film at the US box office.

‘TOP GAN: MAVERICK’ BREAKS ‘TITANIC’ AT THE US BOX OFFICE

Top Gun: Maverick marked the return of Oscar-nominated actor Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kasinski. In the film, Cruise reprises his role as Maverick Mitchell, who trains a group of young graduates in a special task.

The official release of the film took place on May 27 and collected millions of tickets worldwide. According to Variety, Top Gun: Maverick grossed $662.5 million (approximately R11 billion) in ticket sales.

That means the action movie has officially overtaken Titanic the film, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, became the seventh highest-grossing film in the United States. The film grossed $659 million (10.9 billion rand) at the time of its release.

TOM CRUISE FLY AS HIGH AS HOLLYWOOD’S TOP STARS

According to Variety , Tom Cruise will earn more than $100 million (R1.7 billion) from his Top Gun: Maverick wages, ticket sales and his share of broadcast revenue.

“I would never bet against Tom Cruise,” the head of the studio told the publication.

“Most actors aren’t worth what you pay them, but Cruise and maybe Dwayne Johnson live up to their salaries.”

Despite the slapstick drama at the Oscars, Will Smith followed Tom Cruise with $35 million (R601 million) for the upcoming film, Emancipation. The film, which will be produced by Apple+, is based on the story of an escaped slave who strives to reach the Union Army.
