JOHANNESBURG – Mineral Resources Minister Gwedd Montashe is expected to meet with the Jagersfontein community on Tuesday following a fatal accident at a local mine.

The homes of several residents in a small town in the Free State were flooded when water gushed after a dam wall collapsed on Sunday.

Montashe’s visit comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa promised residents on Monday that government aid was on the way.

The minister is expected to meet the victims of Sunday’s ordeal and hear first-hand the traumatic experience they have endured since losing their homes on Sunday.

This was reported by the local municipality of Copán on Monday Eyewitness news an estimated 60 to 100 homes were flooded when the mine dam burst and flooded the area.

The minister is expected to spell out the steps the government will take to ensure accountability, given that at least one person has died and several others have been injured in the incident.

Police are understood to be still searching for three people who went missing as parts of Jagersfontein were covered in gray mud.

According to his office, Montashe will also meet with the management of the affected mine.
