A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to three life terms for killing three members of the same family near Ngkeleni in the Eastern Cape.
The incident took place when Mandisi Mohanda broke into the family spaza shop.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Luksala Tyali, says Mahanda escaped from the North West Penitentiary in 2018.
Tyali says that before this incident, Mohanda was serving a life sentence for murder.
“Mahanda was found guilty of murdering three members of the Namkonde family in Ngkeleni in 2018 when he robbed their spaza shop at gunpoint. The court upheld the prosecution’s case that Mahanda deserved to be removed from society for a long time because he could not be rehabilitated. It was informed that Mahanda was a fugitive from the law after escaping from a penitentiary in (the) North West where he was serving a life sentence for murder when he committed this crime.”
