Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs met for the first time in a league match back in 1983, when the former in their current form were promoted to the top division for the first time.

Since then, the teams have met in 76 league games. Of these, Kaizer Chiefs hold sway with 31 wins to Mamelodi Sundowns’ 24. There were 21 games that ended in a draw.
Kaizer Chiefs have also won more matches against Mamelodi Sundowns since the inception of the PSL in 1996/97, winning 21 of their 52 league clashes during that time. Mamelodi Sundowns have 16 wins in the PSL era, while there have been 15 draws.

The games between the two teams have produced several memorable clashes, most notably perhaps Kaizer Chiefs’ 4-3 10-a-side victory in February 2004 at Loftus Versfeld in the 2004/05 season.
In that game, Skara Ngabese was sent off and current Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane played.

Amakhosi have won their last two trips to Loftus Versfeld – the venue for Saturday’s game – in 2019/20 and 2020/21.
The latter defeat was Mamelodi Sundowns’ only defeat of the 2020/21 campaign.
Kaizer Chiefs’ away defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns last season was their only away defeat in the league in their last five visits (W3 D1).
Another meeting between the teams last campaign ended in a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium.
