Mamelodi Sundowns seems to have made a decision to accommodate the returnees Bongani Zungu who returned to them on a free transfer in August.

Bafana Bafana International Motobi Mwala looks set to make a permanent switch from midfield to centre-back if Mankoba Mngkiti’s comments are anything to go by.

In Saturday’s post-match interview, Mngkiti explained why Mwala played at centre-back rather than his usual midfield position against the Golden Arrows.

And according to Mngkiti, Sundowns planned for Mwala to rotate between the two positions when they first signed him from Highlands Park.

In his own words, Mngkiti said the central midfield position is now loaded and that is the reason Mwala was moved from midfield to centre-back, where Sundowns believe they are very thin.

Sundowns currently have Rivaldo Coetzee, Andile Jali, Teboha Makohen, Sipho Mbule and Zungu in central midfield.

And with Mwala in mind, that means Sundowns have six central midfielders competing for two midfield spots, with the technical team opting for the Bafana Bafana man to move into the back four.

The decision could be seen as an attempt to bring Zunga into that midfield position without killing Mwala’s confidence as he has already struggled for regular game time since the start of the year.

“In my view, he will still continue in that role and that is what we have always planned for him as a technical team,” Mngkiti told reporters.

“Even when we brought him to Sundowns, we wanted to have him for both options. We wanted him to be a fifth central defender and another option in midfield.”

“But now that we’ve loaded up the midfield and we’ve had a bit of trouble in central defence, he’s a good option for us,” Mngkiti added.
