Deputy President David Mabuza is expected to visit Kenya’s new President William Samoi Ruta on Tuesday. Mabuza will represent President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ruto is set to succeed his boss, Uhuru Kenyatta, who is retiring after two terms in office. At least twenty world leaders are expected at the inauguration ceremony.

President Uhuru Kenyatta came to power in 2013 in a political marriage of convenience with his deputy, William Ruto.

At the time, both were charged with crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court for allegedly planning and financing those behind the chaos.

Uhuru, as they became known, performed well in his first term but fell out after a handshake in March 2018 between Uhuru and then opposition leader Raila Odinga. His administration had a mixed bag of hits and misses.

It will be remembered for major infrastructure projects, including new roads, ports and standard gauge railways. However, the projects were said to have led to a large national debt.

Kenyatta has also failed to curb corruption despite coming to power on a promise to end corruption. Opinions are divided on his performance as the curtain falls on his administration.

His successor will inherit an economy on its knees, a country mired in debt and experiencing a food crisis after the failure of four consecutive rainy seasons.

How he leads the East African nation out of these crises will determine how his rule’s relationship with the people will evolve.
