JOHANNESBURG – The Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) closed the N12 at Eldorado Park on Friday due to burning tires and debris.
Residents protested after about 20 people, including two teenagers, were shot dead in gang-related violence in the past three months.
Earlier, the Metropolitan Police Department said it was deploying additional officers to the area to deal with the ongoing violence in the community.
JMPD’s Halani Fihla advised motorists to use alternate routes.
“The situation is currently tense but not volatile and officers have been deployed to try and diffuse the situation and divert traffic away from the protest. Expect delays in the area and motorists are strongly advised to avoid the N12 at Eldorado Park,” he said.
