Fresh from winning the main event at EFC 97 last week, defeating Boualem Sahraoui by naked choke and forcing the Frenchman to tap out, Gift Walker says he’s on his own race to glory.
The 22-year-old personal trainer wants to continue to develop in his lightweight division and will not feel the pressure now that his colleague Cameron Simon has signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
“Cameron and I have fought, we’ve had some moments together, I’m happy for him. I even gave him a massage – I’m really happy for him, but it’s his way and all these guys chasing UFC contracts, it’s their way. I’m chasing the UFC, but not so fast. You don’t want to go to the UFC and just be another UFC fighter, that’s not what I’m going there for,” Walker said.
Walker is honest with himself that he is not yet ready to compete with any of the UFC athletes, but he has specific goals.
“If I get to the UFC, I want to be the UFC world champion. right now I look at myself and honestly I can’t be a top five UFC guy, you have to be real with yourself so I have to go to the big bad world of MMA and I have to meet some foreign guys, I want to build all records. I want to be a multiple world champion at the end of it, I want to have all the money, I want to have all the glory,” he added.
“So all these guys who are looking for quick success should enjoy it, good for them, I wish them the best, they should have fun, but they should know that with quick success comes quick failure, and then they you need to be ready for the other side as well. Whereas with me, whether I win or lose, the next day I’m still the same Gift Walker, Monday I’m back in the gym doing what I love, that’s it man, that’s it everything”.
