Human Settlements Minister Mamaloka Kubai has described a recent statement by the ill-advised and hapless Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter warning of a possible phase 15 blackout in South Africa.
Kubai spoke to SABC News at an event organized by the German Embassy in Pretoria.
De Ruyter made the comments last week while speaking at the Africa Renewable Energy Investment Summit in Cape Town. Kubai says de Ruyter’s statement is unacceptable.

“There’s no way we can get to 15. I think that was a rash statement. When I saw it, I thought it was fake news, and I still think it’s fake news because there’s no way. If we look at the factors of energy responsibility and affordability, it tells us that we will be able to recover. We need to support plants and provide energy. Now it’s summer, so we’ll be able to have fairly low demand, we’ll be able to make sure we can have maintenance, we can recover,” Kubai adds.
