Anglo American CEO Duncan Vanblad welcomed the development of a massive hydrogen-powered mining truck as a testament to South Africa’s move towards a greener future and said the mining industry would continue to contribute to the rise of society.
Vanblad spoke at the unveiling of a giant car at the Mohalakwen platinum mine, outside Macapane, in Limpopo.
Vanblad says mining remains a key part of the economy. “It’s a testament to the power of technology and a symbol of how far mine has come. We need to contribute to a cleaner, greener, healthier and more sustainable market. Society as a whole should be part of this path [and] should benefit from this journey ”.
The giant quarry truck with a hydrogen engine is designed to work in everyday mining conditions for production and waste.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the launch of the hydrogen-powered nuGen truck is a milestone that will lead to new industries in South Africa and a more sustainable economy.
The massive truck can carry a 290-ton cargo of rocks. The President says that by following green decisions, the country will achieve a more innovative and resource-intensive economy.
“Developing the hydrogen economy is a strategic priority for our country, so I say again that this is a smart move for Anglo American, but it is a giant step for SA’s hydrogen future. Our objection is to become a real center of production of green hydra. This will lead to the creation of new productions, and I would like us to imagine that this is another gold, another diamond field. “
