CAPE TOWN – The Gift of the Givers said they have their hands full dealing with the growing water crisis in the Amathole district of the Eastern Cape.

The municipality has been in financial disputes with its employees for several years.

But the situation has since worsened in recent weeks, with allegations that workers are deliberately destroying water infrastructure.

It affected thousands of residents, including schools and hospitals.

Muhammad Gangat of The Gift of the Givers spoke at the CapeTalk breakfast on Monday.

“We started at five in the morning, we finish at one in the morning the next day. Residents call non-stop. Running from Adelaide in the morning to collect water from wells, supplies were hectic. You can actually fill the hospital right now and by the time we get back to the wells in Adelaide, the hospital will call you again, they’re empty,” Gangat explained.
