Eskom plans to introduce periodic blackouts in phase 4 – SABC News

Eskom says there will be a phase four blackout this afternoon from 5pm. The power utility has temporarily suspended power outages for several hours today.

Eskom spokesperson Sikanathi Mantshantsha says the fifth phase of load shedding will be implemented tomorrow night and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

“Load shedding will vary between stage 4 and 2 throughout the day until Wednesday. Changes in load shedding phases will be more erratic due to the lack of buffer normally provided by diesel generating capacity between generator unit failures.’

“The increased implementation of load shedding is mainly due to the high level of breakdowns and exhausted emergency generation reserves. Three power units at the Kusile power plant are out of action due to a chimney accident at the end of October and will remain offline for several months,” says Mantshancha.
