JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in Ekurhuleni has endorsed the election of three leaders from the province as part of the party’s top six in December.

Former provincial chairman Paul Mashatile, current Ekurhuleni chairman Mzwandile Masina and member of the party’s national organizing team Nomvule Makanyane were decided following a regional executive committee meeting on Wednesday.

Mashatile has already secured the support of the ANC in Limpopo, and its provincial executive committee is also vying for party president Cyril Ramaphosa to win a second term.

Unsurprisingly, Ekurhuleni under Masina has little to say about Ramaphosa – after all, he has previously threatened to resign if Ramaphosa wins the 2017 leadership contest.

After the REC meeting, he left a gap in the ANC’s number one question, instead endorsing three leaders from Gauteng, including Masina, for the top six positions.

Ekurhuleni wants his former provincial chairperson and now treasurer-general Mashatile to be elected as deputy president, with Masina stepping in to handle the ANC’s troubled finances, while Makanyana managed to gain first-class respect.

Ekurhuleni offered to consider her for the post of Deputy Secretary General.

This region, the largest in Gauteng, will take this to the provincial executive to persuade it to take a similar stance.
