All UK residents aged 50 and over will be offered another Covid booster this autumn.
The program will also include health professionals as well as young people who are at greater risk of the disease.
Who will get the fall booster?
Another dose of the Covid vaccine will be offered:
- adults aged 50 and over
- people aged five to 49 with conditions that mean they are at greater risk – including pregnant women
- care home staff
- frontline health and social workers
- unpaid guardians
- household contacts of people with weakened immunity
The rollout will begin in early fall, a year after the first Covid accelerators are introduced.
It was originally expected that another shot would only be offered to healthy people over the age of 65, but the program was expanded in response to the spread of the Omicron variant.
Who was offered the Spring booster?
- adults age 75 and older
- residents of homes for the elderly
- people 12 years of age and older with a weakened immune system

At the end of May, nearly three million people in England were still not fully vaccinated, putting them at greater risk of being hospitalized or dying if they became seriously ill with Covid.
How long after Covid can I get a booster?
People under the age of 18 who are not at higher risk of contracting Covid should wait 12 weeks.
You should not take the booster if you are seriously ill or have a high temperature. However, Pfizer and Moderna say you don’t need to delay with a mild fever or cold.
Vaccines do not give you Covid and cannot cause you to test positive for Covid.
Which of the children can be pricked?
- all 12- to 15-year-olds are offered two doses of Pfizer
- all 16- and 17-year-olds can get a booster three months after the second shot
- Children aged 12 to 15 who are at risk, or who live with someone with a weakened immune system, can receive Revoxater
How do I order the Covid vaccine?
You can book vaccinations online or visit a clinic, although not all centers offer vaccinations for children under 12, and some have closed after vaccinations began.

- U Scotland: Over 16s can register for their first dose or order a second or booster dose online or by calling 0800 030 8013
- U Wales: Persons over 16 will be invited to the booster. If you haven’t been invited – or you haven’t received the first two doses – you can contact your health board
- U Northern Ireland: you can make an appointment for children over 5 years old online or by calling 0300 200 7813
Carers of children aged 5 to 11 in Scotland and Wales must wait until they are offered an appointment.
Bookings for the autumn advanced training program are not yet open.
What vaccine will I receive?
Pharmaceutical companies are updating their vaccines to fight new Covid variants, but it is not yet clear which ones will be used for the autumn boosters.
The first and second doses are either AstraZeneca or (for people under 40) Pfizer or Moderna.
Until now, boosters have been a single dose of Pfizer or Moderna – regardless of which vaccine you received before.
However, if you cannot get Pfizer or Moderna for medical reasons, you can get a booster dose of AstraZeneca.
Two other vaccines have also been approved for use in the UK – Janssen and Novavax – but they have not been given to UK patients.
What are the side effects?
They are part of the body’s normal immune response to vaccines and usually resolve within a day or two.
