BBC Eye is investigating the disappearance of Sophia Huang Xueqing, a well-known feminist journalist who created the Chinese #MeToo movement.

In the summer of 2021, Sofia was awarded the prestigious Chevening Fellowship, funded by the British Government, to study gender studies at the University of Sussex. But in September, on her way to the airport to catch a flight to the United Kingdom, Sofia and her fellow activist Wang Jianbin “disappeared.”

Sofia and Jianbin are among tens of thousands in China who have been captured and detained in recent years as a result of widespread state repression against activists.

Now, when the two are expected to face trial for “incitement to undermine state power”, BBC Eye is investigating how Sofia’s history is being erased, how Chinese censors are conducting a disinformation campaign against her and why there is silence in the UK. her business.
