Dressed in a kaleidoscope of colour, enthusiastic football fans created a festive atmosphere as they welcomed the newly crowned African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions with music, dance and celebration just days after their victory.

Celebrating the team’s achievements, Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa also presented Banyana’s team with a check for R5.8 million in addition to a bonus of R9.2 million for winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

Together with contributions from SAFA and other federations, Banyana can now count on bonus payments that have reached about 24 million rand.

“During the team’s visit, President Ramaphosa highlighted the positive role women play in the development of society,” Mthethwa said on Tuesday. “So he instructed the whole government to give Banyana more than what we originally promised. I understand that he meant it, perhaps, as a request, but no minister would oppose such a thing.

“The Ministry of Finance understood that this was really an instruction, not a request. Together with the National Treasury, we have prepared an implementation plan and I am pleased to announce the payment of 15 million rand by the government.

“I am also pleased to meet my commitment of 5.8 million rand in recognition of the team’s outstanding achievements. Various others have pledged to contribute further. No amount can capture our gratitude for their achievements.”

Wild celebrations continued for coach Desiree Ellis, her support staff and players after they were received by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Union Buildings shortly after returning to South Africa.

Ramaphosa applauded the champions and said they had done the nation proud.

“Our hearts are filled with pride today. They are bursting at the seams with great joy,” said Ramaphosa, who is quoted as saying Sport24.

“You promised you’d bring the cup, and it’s here where it belongs. When you took the field on Saturday night in Rabat, we South Africans – 60 million of us – were with you in spirit. We watched you go to war like gladiators.

“The good news of your victory was like rain on dry, hard ground. With your victory, you lifted the hearts of the nation.”
