Twelve people accused in last month’s shooting, which left six people dead and injured, told Alexandra Magistrates’ Court they were assaulted by police during their arrest.
Their legal representatives claimed during a formal bail application that this was done in order to get their clients to admit and confess to the crimes.
The group was arrested at the Nobuhle Hostel shortly after a series of robberies and the killing of six residents.
Alex FM DJ Joshua Mbatha was one of the six killed.
Police Minister Bheki Chele visited the area after the shootings:
Detective Albert Jamian argued that the defendants could pose a danger to society if released on bail.
“There is a possibility that they could endanger the lives of residents because they were carrying firearms while committing these crimes, and they were shooting indiscriminately and killing innocent people. They also robbed the victims of their belongings. It can be seen that they have no remorse.”
